Retro Bowl Tips

1. Only the playoffs matter.

Your first game season is the hardest; this is because of a lack of in-game currency, aka Coaching Credits, to make any major personnel moves. A recent update of the game has it adopt the 7-team playoff format the NFL recently put in place, meaning unless you become the No. 1 seed in either the AFC or NFC, you’re not going to get a bye in the first round, meaning your path to the Super Bowl will be exactly the same whether you’re 16-0 and seeded at No. 1, or 8-8 and seeded at No. 6. Don’t worry if you have a lousy couple of games in the regular season, especially during your first season. Your main goal during Year 1 will be stacking up on the Coaching Credits, which will eventually let you draft and sign the players you need, as well as get yourself the right coaching staff.

2. Draft for potential with balance being key.

It’s essential when you’re starting out, to make full utilization of the retro bowl draft, and that will involve trading some of your lower-end players you inherited in your first season, that you were stuck with, for better players with real potential. Drafting players is an art with many factors at play. You must scout wisely, as your ideal player is someone who doesn’t cost much, fills your needs, and has the potential to grow into a great player — the last of which you can know if you use one of your few scouting reports on them. Don’t necessarily load up on 1st round draft picks, as some of them can be as expensive as signing a free agent, and everyone will not be a superstar. Please keep in mind that some rookie contracts are brief — a 2-year rookie contract is not uncommon — and at the end of that contract, their values will spike. So, you have a small window to develop them, and while you get the player for a steal, it’s only for a year or two. Knowing how to draft effectively is key to the free version of this game, as you only have ten roster spots, and most years, you won’t be able to get everything you want. Stack your offense with some playmakers at WR and TE, and plan to spend the most on a QB with a good arm and accuracy. Fill your defense year after year with high-potential but affordable players. A good roster will consist at minimum of: a QB who can do the job, two WRs, a RB a TE, and then four of the best defensive players you can find. Try fitting in a backup QB in there because when your QB gets injured, it can seriously impact what plays you can make.

3. Limit your turnovers.

Football is a game in which the person who makes the least mistakes wins. You must limit turnovers, and this can be accomplished by your quarterback throwing the ball far over the defender’s heads, and make sure you have fast WRs. The worst thing that’ll happen is you get an incomplete pass. It’s better than giving the other team another possession. In the event your QB goes down, and you don’t have a backup, and you’re left with default sprite at the position, don’t throw the long pass. A regular player’s arm strength and accuracy are not good, so your best bet is to go with a series of fast and short, quick passes. And be aware that you still might not be able to avoid interceptions in this scenario — the position of QB is very important in this game.

4. A great kicker is important.

5. Get good at 2 point conversions.

What wins the close games are 2-point conversions after touchdowns, and if you have a top-rated RB, these are ridiculously easy to make — just throw them a short pass and score. Even an average RB can make these passes reliably if they’re in position — as you give them a short pass in the end-zone, BUT don’t run it. If you become fast and efficient at 2 pointers, it means the only way you can lose is if you turn the ball over a lot, or your opponent blows you out by scoring a lot of touchdowns. This simple skill will drastically increase your winning percentage.
